ABOUT THIS MODULE
Music in the Digital Space – How to Live Code 2

This module is a follow up to ‘Music in the Digital Space – How to Live Code’, an introduction to live coding for the creation of interactive music and visuals.
Whereas the first module focused on sound, the second puts more emphasis on creating visuals and working with a virtual 3D environment. The participants learn to code their own music and visuals, and a series of audiovisual jams enables them to learn from each other. Lectures by guest artists introduce the participants to experimental music and audiovisual art, to broaden their horizons.

Live coding is a technique of real time sound and image manipulation through writing code with the aim of changing the ongoing artistic process. In the workshop sessions the participants use the most popular software for live coding, TidalCycles (http://tidalcycles.org), as well as web interfaces for creating visuals such as Hydra (https://hydra.ojack.xyz). They also use the Estuary web platform (https://estuary.mcmaster.ca) for collective collaboration and real-time content creation. The workshop sessions work towards an audiovisual presentation in a 3D virtual environment, as well as a multichannel algorithmic mashup.
HOW TO
The short DIY guide ‘Music in the Digital Space – How to Live Code 2’ is intended for workshop leaders and educators who would like to combine multichannel audio and live coding. It is a follow-up to the guide ‘What is Live Coding?’ that provides an introduction to live coding for the creation of interactive music and visuals.
HOW WE DID IT
‘Music in the Digital Space – How to Live Code 2’ took place in two blocks at A4 in the period from May till November 2022. The group consisted of participants who attended the previous course as well as new ones, all young people aged 16–20. A first intensive weekend introduced the topic of live coding. After that the new participants learned from the more experienced ones in weekly jam sessions. In the second block (September–November) the focus shifted to live coding in a virtual 3D environment and experimenting with multichannel sound. At the end the participants performed their music and visuals together in a 3D online environment at the NEXT 2022 festival, as well as live on a multichannel sound system at A4. The course was led by musician and programmer Fero Király, and included guest presentations by the artists Jonáš Gruska, Ján Šicko and Jakub Krejčí.
